Laxmi Institute of Technology, Sarigam (LIT) is one of the acknowledged premier technical institutes in Valsad District of Gujarat, was institutionalized by Smt. Shantaben Haribhai Gajera Charitable Trust, Surat, who endeavored to uplift the new generation of ambitious students and equip them with all the possible updated technical skills and talents fused with human excellence in order to rebuild the society in a modern scientific way. The college (LIT), one of the most premier technical institutions, has been affiliated to Gujarat Technological University, Ahmedabad for providing technical courses to the students in South Gujarat. Since the day of its inception, it has also been ceaselessly endeavoring to drive its learners to scale the great academic heights in various spheres of education in order to realize the educational goals.

As a matter of fact the institution began functioning with a vision:

"To educate the unreached talents to beacon the nation through research and innovative technology".

Within its inception of 5 years, Laxmi Institute of Technology, Sarigam noted for imparting quality education in the State, has been able to establish its credibility as a centre better known for academic excellence and achievements. It has become one of the finest educational hubs for providing the students with hi-tech educational facilities while retaining its traditional values by using its strong industrial contacts in order to mould the young and talented individuals who can compete in the global arena. The institute, established in 2010, is located in tribal area of Valsad District in South Gujarat, concentrates in educational enrichment of the region.

Curricular Aspects

The curriculum prepared by the Gujarat Technological University (GTU), Gujarat, to which the Institute is affiliated, is well transacted to the students after serious preparation as well as critical analysis by the teachers concerned. Being an affiliated institution, LIT is always in tune with the latest trends in education and guidelines.

The Institutes main objective is to transform the students into well meaning citizens in the form of a rich corpus of talent through the committed pattern of instructions based on carefully prepared and well designed curricular aspects as per the changing needs of the time.

The staff council meetings are held frequently which plan programmes and discuss key issues in tune with the vision and mission of the institution. Decisions taken in the staff council are communicated properly to the entire student community through displaying notices and making announcements in the class rooms. The following criterion is followed to communicate the vision, mission and objectives of the college to the stakeholders:

Vision and Mission are communicated to students, teachers, staff and other stakeholders through wall posters, staff meetings etc.

It is communicated to the students through Institute's prospectus, magazine and during the orientation programs.

Also institute's vision & mission is displayed at all important places in the campus as well as in the web site of the institute which can be visited at lit.laxmi.edu.in.

The Institute prepares the action plans of the academic and administrative systems closely monitored by the Governing Body and enforces the same for the effective implementation of the curriculum.

Each department is entrusted with the interdepartmental academic audit responsibilities at the end of each semester under the directives and the control of the IQAC and accordingly the necessary suggestions for the improvement & enhancement of the quality are given to the respective departments as and when required.

The institute invites guest speakers from the industry which help the required level of knowledge about the regional and global employment opportunities for the students. Special classes are taken for communication skills for the students with rural and multi-lingual backgrounds.

The Institution has a well established system of collecting feedback from its stakeholders through on-line as well as through hard copy. Such feedback collected from the parents, alumni, industries etc. are used for modifying the curriculum appropriately.

Teaching-learning and evaluation

Teaching - Learning Evaluation system at the college is done on the basis of Learner-centric approaches through adoption of cognitive methods/interactive methods that are often testified on the basis of learners' response. The subject experts conduct three periodic Progressive Assessment Tests and one Pre University Test before the final semester examinations as the part of the continuous evaluation system. The feedbacks, after the tests help the teachers to arrange interactive/ doubt clearing remedial classes. GTU syllabus is also quite adequate to meet the academic requirements of the students. However the subject teachers also, in their own ways, add modules. The college managing committee/the college academic advisory committee arranges to take periodic feedback on the teachers' class room performance from the students in their own ways (using a feedback format) without the knowledge of the faculty members and then it provides feedback-information received to the Departmental Heads for discussion to improve the learner centric class room strategies. In addition the weaker students are traced out by the faculty team and special care is taken by the faculty members concerned by arranging special doubt clearing/remedial classes in order to cope with their fellow students. These students are counseled by the senior faculty team and the related subject experts.

Bridge classes are conducted for the said students before the commencement of regular class works to instill the fundamental concepts in Mathematics, Physics, Communication Skills and other basic subjects required for engineering education. During the process, assessments are made at regular intervals and the students are instructed accordingly for better performance. The teachers are encouraged to attend Faculty Development Programs, Symposiums, Seminars and Workshops in the relevant areas to enable them to improve and fine-tune their ICT based teaching-learning methodologies. In this regard the institute's Wi-Fi environment to provide additional learning materials on the latest technologies proves itself an asset for the purposes.

The Institutes Training & Placement Cell organizes special training programmes which include aptitude test, role play, GD, personality development skills, spoken English classes and communication sessions with the aim to develop the students to face on-campus as well as off campus interviews.

Research Consultancy and Extension

LIT has established a research committee consisting of senior professors and academicians. In the area of Consultancy, recently the faculty members from the department of Civil Engineering have provided Consultancy to Smt. Shantaben Haribhai Gajera Charitable Trust, Surat, as a part of surveying. MoUs have also been signed with different industries for institution-industry interaction programmes. The institution conducts different extension activities like Blood donation, Plantation, Swatch Bharat Abhiyan, Adult education etc under the banner of NSS wing of the college.

Infrastructure and Learning Resources

LIT, being one of the leading technical institutions, maintains the state of the art infrastructure with high-end class rooms, laboratories, library with reading room, canteen, hostels for boys and girls, auditorium, girls common room, aesthetically designed gardens etc. In addition, the institute provides:

The facilities for outdoor and indoor games, a gymnasium, NSS, Cultural activities, Public speaking, Communication skills development, Yoga, Health and Hygiene etc. for the overall development of the students.

The facilities for the optimal utilization of the well equipped college library which houses 14907 volumes of Reference books and 56 volumes of National and International Journals. IFW ERP software is used for library transactions and maintenance.

Student support and progression

The institution provides:

Different kinds of supports for the students, such as Medical assistance, free medical facility at the College Health Centre, Health insurance, group insurance scheme etc. The students are taken to the nearby hospital when the need arises. An appointed Doctor regularly visits the campus for the free medical treatment of the students.

Training facilities for competitive exams which help the students to face these examinations like GATE and others.

Communication Skills Lab with audio-video facilities to enable students for better English speaking practice sessions in communication skills. The institution also ensures that the students are constantly updated with information about competitive exams and various training programme.

Skill development programmes for spoken English, computer literacy, etc. to develop leadership, interview skills and soft skills. (Communicative English is part of the curriculum for the B.E. Programme.)

Governance, Leadership and Management

The Vision and Mission of the institution is to ensure that every unreached talent should get education to beacon the nation through research and innovative technology. With a view to achieve the same, the Institute observes and maintains a well-defined participatory management system having the Governing body, headed by the Chairman conforming to the statutory regulations of all the regulatory agencies. The institute's Governing Body fully conforms to the Vision and philosophy, the statutory regulations of all the regulatory bodies and the affiliating university.

Innovative and Best Practices

As regards the innovative practices, the institution has taken active participation in UNNAT BHARAT ABHIYAN as 'Smart Village' project, Vishwakarma Yojana, Digital India, Swatch Bharat Abhiyan etc. Institute is also planning to initiate the programs like energy conservation, water harvesting, renewable energy management, Hazard Waste/E-waste management etc. to maintain an eco-friendly environment campus. Laxmi Vidyapeeth had also got ISO 9001:2008 certifications for Quality Management System for imparting education for college level degree students.
