National Youth Day

Inspiring youth to understand the ideas and life of Shree Swami Vivekanand, and to realize the power of youth in building a better and healthier country.

“Arise! Awake! And stop not until the goal is reached” – a great saying of Swami Vivekananda that always inspires us to strive for success and achieve more in our lives. The one qualification Swami Vivekananda sought in young people was to cultivate and promote the ability to ‘feel. National Youth Day is observed on January 12 to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s birthday. It was he who always believed that power, strength, and efficiency of youth can build a prosperous and strong country. The main objective of National Youth Day is to motivate the youth and create a desire in them to build a better nation and spread powerful ideas among the youth. Undoubtedly, the government wants the youth to know the life of Swami Vivekanand and his ideas.

How Vivekananda’s philosophy can lead the youth and the nation to a better country can be seen from the ideology mentioned here:

He believes that – for well-being and mental health

  • Control of the mind is of great importance for a successful journey and a peaceful life.

  • Morality is closely related to how well one is able to control one’s mind.

  • Focus on truthfulness, selflessness and purity.

  • One should try to be selfless and always work for truthful things.

He believes that – for/about youth

  • “Take risks in your life, If you win, you can lead! If you lose, you can guide.”

  • “Youth is humanity in the making, If something is in the works, the more attention you pay to it, the better the product will be.”

  • “If the world was guided by youth, it would be a better place, They are the ones who are most alive, idealistic, and energetic.”

National Youth Day in India is not just a one-day event. Rather, it is celebrated for a week. It is organized by the Government of India, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the state governments. The day is celebrated on the occasion of the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, who was one of the most influential leaders in Indian history. In 1984, the Indian government declared this day as National Youth Day and since 1985, it has been celebrated every year.
