Indian Army Day is celebrated every year on January 15 in honour of Field Marshal Kondandera M. Cariappa, who assumed the office of the first Army Chief of our country. The 75th Army Day is a day dedicated to the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the country and paved the way for others to follow. Originally known as the British Indian Army, the Indian Army evolved into the National Army after India gained independence from the British.
The title was conferred on him in 1949 by the last British Chief of Staff, General Francis Butcher. Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa was born on January 28, 1900, in the state of Mercara, now known as Karnataka. He was awarded the King’s Commission with the first batch of Indian cadets in 1919 and was the first Indian officer to be admitted to the Staff University at Quetta in 1933. In 1942, Lt. Col. K. M. Cariappa formed the 7th Machine Gun Battalion of the Rajputs (now 17 Rajputs).
In 1946, he joined the Imperial Defence University in the United Kingdom as a Brigadier General. He had been appointed from the United Kingdom to the sub-committee of the Armed Forces Restoration Committee, where he had reached an amicable agreement on the division of the Army between India and Pakistan during Partition.

The Army Day Parade will be held this year on January 15, 2023 in Bengaluru. The Army Day parade will be held in Bengaluru on January 15, 2023. This is in line with the decision to hold such events of national importance outside the capital to gain greater publicity and ensure citizen participation. On this day, we honour the achievements of our nation’s soldiers who have set the best example of selfless service, brotherhood, and above all, love for their country. We are proud that the Indian Army is one of the best militaries in the world, competing with superpowers like the United States, Russia and China.
According to the release, General Manoj Pandey, Chief of Army Staff, will lay a wreath in Bengaluru in honour of the Brave Hearts and discuss the Army Day parade on Jan. 15. The parade will highlight the Army’s military strength while demonstrating its efforts to transform into a sustainable, technology-driven, lethal and agile force.
The Indian Army’s Southern Command, based in Pune, has organized an awareness campaign in some 75 remote rural areas in eight states – including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu – in its area of responsibility. As part of the campaign, themed “Gram Seva-Desh Seva,” Indian Army personnel will visit 75 remote villages to inform people about the Agnipath recruitment program. Army soldiers will also join villagers in a cleanliness drive to promote the Swachh Bharat Mission.
