CIVIL Engineering

About Department

The Department of Civil Engineering offers 3 – year Diploma Course and 4 – year Bachelor of Engineering. The courses are approved by AICTE New Delhi & affiliated to Gujarat Technological University, Ahmedabad. Civil Engineering is known as the oldest and bridging branch of engineering. Civil engineering primarily covers activities of engineering discipline from planning, designing, and construction of buildings to development of water supply structures. Civil engineering industry also encompasses areas like soil and rock mechanics, surveying, material science, and environmental science. This specifically deals with the activities of designing and construction of structures like bridges, dams, harbours, canals, roads, tunnels, and water-supply systems, power plants, aircraft, water-treatment plants etc. It has the potential to build a strong economy of a nation. With the development of society and because of technological advancement, demands of civil engineers have increased prominently. The faculty of the department continues to strive by exploring new frontiers of knowledge, imparting the latest technical knowledge to the students and conducting high quality of research.

CIVIL ENGINEERING - LABORATORY

Applied Mechanics

This lab deals with basic application and verification of various laws of forces like Law of Parallelogram of Forces, Polygon Law of Forces, Support Reactions of a Simply Supported Beam, laws of friction, efficiencies of various levers and study of system of pulleys. Overall aim is to provide an opportunity to students for verification of theoretical concepts of statics and Engineering Mechanics for in depth understanding of fundamentals about the subject matter.

This lab deals with teaching the students, Basics of various work such as masonry work, plumbing, welding, pipe cutting and threading and carpentry work. The fundamentals of building construction are also taught by real life example through site visit during initial, intermediate and final stages of construction.

Computer Aided Drawing / Computer Applications And Graphics

The CAD lab provides the students an excellent opportunity to learn planning of civil engineering structures. The students learn to prepare plan, elevation and sections of various structures using CAD software and also various application of Microsoft Office.

Basics Of Civil Engineering

The lab work consists of making students aware of various instruments used for chaining , levelling and surveying such as chains , taps , dumpy level , levelling staff , surveyors and prismatic compass, plan meter etc. and carrying out chain survey , compass survey , traverse survey and levelling using dumpy level.

Surveying/ Advanced Surveying

This laboratory provides an opportunity to students to learn about land surveying and measurement methods. Students gain familiarity with Ranging and Fixing of Survey Station, Plotting Building Block by offset with the help of cross staff, to determine the magnetic bearing of a line using surveyors compass, using prismatic compass and measurement and adjustment of included angles of traverse using prismatic compass. This lab also facilitates students about determining the reduced levels and to carry out profile levelling and plot longitudinal and cross sections for road using tilting levels and dumpy levels. Students also get an opportunity to learn to measure horizontal and vertical angles using theodolite,Total Station and determining horizontal and vertical distance by tachometric survey. Student’s conduct Double levelling, contouring, plane tabling etc.

Soil Mechanics

In this lab students determine Grain size distribution by sieving, water content by Pycnometer, specific Gravity by Pycnometer, liquid limit by Casagrandes apparatus, liquid limit by cone penetrometer, plastic limit, shrinkage limit. Students are also being facilitated for determination of field density by core-cutter, Determination of field density by sand replacement method , determination of compaction properties by standard Proctor Test Apparatus, determination of C-Ø values by Direct Shear Test Apparatus , determination of unconfined compressive strength by unconfined compression test apparatus. Students also perform tests to determine the permeability of soil by constant and falling head methods, to determine the CBR of soil and to determine the grain size distribution of fine grained soil by Hydrometer.

Structural Mechanics I / II

The Structural Engineering Laboratory is well-equipped for structural testing of large-scale structural elements and subassemblies like curved members, columns and simply supported beams. By using Universal Testing Machine students find out tensile and compressive strength of materials such as steel rods, concrete block etc.

Basic Transportation Engineering

Road Material Testing lab provides facilities to students with hands-on experience to Aggregate impact test, Angularity number test, fineness modulus of a given sample of coarse aggregate. The lab is also equipped with the facility for Los angles Abrasion test, Aggregate crushing value test, Standard tar viscometer test , Specific gravity and water absorption test . Students also get opportunity to determine the elongation index for given sample of aggregate, to determine the flakiness index of given sample of aggregate and Ductility test. Further, facility to determine the softening point for give sample of bitumen, Marshell stability test, Float test are also available along with team of experts and well equipped technicians.

Building Materials , Concrete Technology

This lab has facility for various important test and experimental setups for determination of important properties of cement, aggregate and concrete mix for providing strong concepts and sound knowledge about the concrete technology. Experimental setups to determine Initialand Final setting time of cement, fineness of Cement, compressive strength of cement etc are available. This lab also facilitate the students for conducting various tests like slump test, compression factor test for concrete mix, sieve analysis to determine the fineness modulus of coarse aggregates and fine aggregates.

Hydraulics

This lab provides an opportunity to students for verification of fundamental laws of fluid mechanics like Bernoulli’s theorem and study and calibration of various devices like Venturimeter, Orifice meter and notches. Students also deal with concept of met centric height and viscosity of fluid.

Water Supply And Sanitary Engineering

This laboratory supports research and teaching activities of the Environmental Engineering and provides facility to determine the pH of the sample of sewage, to determine Total Solids of the sewage sample, to determine the Total Dissolved Solids of the sewage sample, to find out Total Settle-able Solids of the sewage sample, to determine Total Suspended Solids of the sewage sample. Students also get an opportunity to determine Biochemical Oxygen Demand exerted by the wastewater sample and to find out Chemical Oxygen Demand of the waste water sample. An exposure about new trends in modern sanitary fitting is also given to students for sound knowledge about demand of modern industry.

Different Design based software related to Civil Engineering where discussed such as: AUTO-CAD, STAAD-PRO and REVIT.

FDP ON “STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING OF BRIDGES”

The FDP ended with a note that computers have replaced the way entire structural design is done but it cannot replace sound engineering judgement and thereby the proverb “With good engineering judgment you can produce on the back of an envelop that which otherwise cannot be produced with a ton of computer output”.

Flow of FDP was as follows:
Building System & Load Transfer Process
Need for Structural Modelling
Simplified Structural Systems
Support reaction and Frame Internal Forces
Soil Structure interactions
Different finite element soft wares available in India
